A family friend of ours recently tried Flex Shot, a new kind of rubber sealant in a pressurized can that has been seen on TV lately. He knew about ShopperTested, and was interested in sharing his story with you all here.

Without further ado, here’s his review (along with the best place he found to buy the sealant below).

If you own a boat, you really need to buy some Flex Shot Sealant. Let me tell you why.

I was driving down the street one day when I saw an old wooden row boat dumped upside down on the side of the side of the road. I pulled over to take a better look, and could immediately see it was in pretty bad shape. However, I though this might make a fun project for my son and I.

The Beginning of My Flex Shot Experience

flex-shotI went up and knocked on the front door and asked the man who answered if he was throwing out the boat. He laughed, and then began describing to me in great detail how many times he had tried to seal the boat up only to have it leak on him again.

When he got to the part about the boat sinking all the way before he could row her back to shore, he threw in a little colorful language that I dare not repeat for him.

Suffice it to say, he and the boat were no longer bonded as they once were.

I asked if I could have it, and he said if I was crazy enough to want it that I could sure have it. He even helped me load it in the pick-up. He asked me to let him know if I ever got her floating again and I shook hands with him and agreed.

My son and I sanded her down real good, and then painted her bright red with white trim. We named her after my wife, Heidi, who had been watching the whole production with great amusement. She kept asking to hear again what the man had said, and every time, she would laugh her head off.

We sealed up every seal with Flex Shot, going really slow to give it a nice thick bead of sealant. We also used our fingers to push it down into the cracks more.

We left this dry for more than 72 hours and then went back around some of the areas that seemed to the worst. In one spot there was a hole big enough to push a quarter through, so we really added a bunch on that spot.

The Final Results

After a few more days, the day of reckoning had arrived. We took her down to a lake in one of the country parks and launched Heidi.

My Wife stayed on the bank exclaiming, “I love you honey but I’m not getting in that thing!” However, the Flex Shot Sealant had surely worked because we were out there for more than a hour, and the inside of the boat was dry as a bone!

Below are some of pros and cons of Flex Shot Sealant as I see them:

Pros:

  1. You do not need to mess with a caulking gun! This is because Flex Shot comes in a pressurized container that is designed to let you apply it through a special flexible nozzle that you simply push with your finger as you run the product along a seam.
  2. The extension tube that is provided with Flex Shot really comes in handy when working with hard to reach areas, plus you can cut it to any size stream you want, including a narrow stream for tiny places.
  3. Flex Shot does not dry out and break loose like other sealants or caulks because it is formulated to withstand temperature ranging from -76°F to 350°F.
  4. Flex Shot contains a fungicide that prevents mildew from growing which is perfect for bathrooms and kitchens!

Cons:

  1. Flex Shot dries much faster than other caulks and sealants so it can be difficult to shape it unless you work with it immediately after you apply it after you apply it. On the other hand, it’s so easy to apply, you can use one hand to apply it and the other to shape it after just a little experience using it.
  2. Flex Shot does not bond well if the surface is even a little greasy. This can be difficult in some environments such as an auto mechanic shop.
