Stuffed burgers are all the rage now and for good reason! They are delicious, a little out of the ordinary, and the possibilities are endless. You can stuff them with various types of cheese, hot peppers, sweet peppers, herbs, sun-dried tomatoes, rice noodles, macaroni and cheese, turkey, ham, mushrooms, onions, black olives, chopped up vegetables, or pretty much anything else edible! If you want to try them, do yourself a favor and get yourself a cool little gadget called the StufZ. It makes the whole process a snap — but I’m getting ahead of myself.

My Experience With the StufZ Burger Press

stufz-burger-pressWhen my family and I first tried stuffed hamburgers at our neighbors’ house, we fell in love with them. Our neighbors had stuffed some of the burgers with Monterey Jack cheese and fresh de-seeded jalapeno peppers for the adults. They had also stuffed some of the burgers with home-made macaroni and cheese for the kids. I admit that I am a kid at heart so of course I had to try both versions. Both were absolutely scrumptious. For the next week, my kids couldn’t stop talking about them, and when anyone mentioned a stuffed hamburger, my husband would get a glazed look in his eyes very similar to how our dog looks when he smells steaks cooking on the grill.

One night, I decided to make my family happy and stuff some hamburgers. I decided to keep it simple, or so I thought, and just use a blend of cheddar and Monterey Jack cheese and some diced sweet red peppers. Having never stuffed a hamburger before, I thought it would be really easy — was I in for a rude awakening! I rolled out some ground beef into one-quarter round balls, pushed a big hole in the center with my thumb, added the cheese and peppers, and then sort of formed the meat over the top to cover up the stuffing.

I then flattened them a bit. Proud of my creations, I took them out to the grill and started to cook them as I would any ordinary hamburger. However, to my chagrin, the seams that I had made didn’t hold up at all. In fact, it was a complete disaster! I got cheese all over the grill and it was a yucky mess to clean up. My family laughed their heads off they thought it was so funny. I think the dog got more of the hamburgers than my family did.

I couldn’t figure out why my stuffed hamburgers didn’t turn out like my neighbors. The problem was I hadn’t actually seen my neighbors make up the patties because they were already made when we got there. While I was out gardening the next day, I met my neighbor at the fence and told her how disastrous my first attempt at stuffed burgers were. Like my family had done, she laughed so hard, she had to sit down.

When my neighbor finally got done laughing and could actually breath and talk again, she told me her secret to making stuffed hamburgers. She said she used the little gaget I mentioned above called the StufZ. She said she had seen it on television one night and on a whim she bought it. She also said her husband poked fun at her when she did but now he says its one of the best investments they ever made, especially since it’s so inexpensive.

My neighbor, who also was one of those who introduced us to the Turbo Roaster, invited me over for a little demonstration and I gladly accepted. I couldn’t believe how incredibly easy the StufZ was to use and how perfect each patty came out. Basically, it has two parts that are attached together. You put the raw meat in one side, close it up, and then press down. This makes the cavity where you put your stuffing and it makes a nice deep cavity. You then open it back up, put in your stuffing, add the other half of your meat to the top, and close it back up to seal the stuffing in. I must say the seal is consistently PERFECT every time!

When I got home, I got on the internet and ordered four StufZ makers so each member of my family could have their own to use. Using the burger stuffer, I now make stuffed hamburgers like a pro. In fact, it’s so easy to use that my 10 year old daughter and my 12 year old son make perfect stuffed patties with it too! Even my husband, who doesn’t usually like to cook, loves using the handy device (almost as much as loves using our Pop Chef). We have a lot of fun as a family while we’re making these and we especially like experimenting with new stuffing ideas.

It doesn’t take long to make stuffed patties with this burger presser, and we can vary up a simple old-standby dish and turn it into multiple unique dinners. The finished product is the kind of meal you’d normally only expect to get occasionally at a special restaurant but we now have them all the time. I even impressed my very hard to impress in-laws with these!

There’s another sneaky advantage to using the StufZ to make stuffed hamburgers too. If you’re having trouble convincing your kids to eat vegetables, you can try adding the veggies you want them to eat in the stuffing. I’ve slipped in mounds of chopped fresh spinach and they gobble them up with no complaints. In fact, just the opposite, they rave about them! I’ve also used grated carrots, diced zucchini, tomatoes, parsley, cilantro, and mushrooms along with a little cheese. Once I even added pickled beets and no one flinched!

Using this product, stuffed burgers are loads of fun to make when you get the extended family together and/or have a few friends over. You can put out various choices in bowls and let everyone create their own personal masterpiece. The burger maker takes the messiness out of the process so everyone seems to have a lot of fun with it. It’s kind of like make your own taco night only with hamburgers! We sometimes have a contest to see who can create the best looking and best tasting stuffed burger.
